If you had taken a walk around Lincoln Square in the mid 1800’s, you wouldn’t have been surrounded by the beautiful single-family homes you see now. At that time the area was filled with farms; in fact, the Lincoln Square/Ravenswood area was called “the celery capital of the nation.” These farms slowly gave way to a residential population. With the introduction of electric street cars and then the first elevated train in 1907, Lincoln Square was better connected to the downtown area. It quickly became a booming residential and business district. The early 1900’s also brought apartment buildings and other rental units to the area.

By 1960, the population of the Lincoln Square area grew to almost 50,000 people. With the increase in the population, Lincoln Square underwent many changes. Recently Lincoln Square has changed from its German roots; it has diversified and has welcomed people of all backgrounds to a warm neighborhood community with a mix of friendly small businesses and wonderful tree-lined streets. These streets are graced with beautiful hundred-year-old houses, million-dollar-plus, new-single family homes and a mix of vintage and new condos.

Lincoln Square is a community that is as complete and friendly as any in Chicago. Truly diverse and having everything a young family could need, it is also prefect for everyone from young adult to senior citizens. Everything in the area is easily reached with a short walk. Hungry? Lincoln Square is home to more than thirty restaurants, everything from award-winning restaurants, such as Glenn’s Diner and Trattoria Truilo, to hidden gems like Budaki’s Drive-In (which is more of a walk-in) and Apart Pizza. Need entertainment? Take a short walk to see a movie at the Davis, or pick up a quick read at the Book Cellar, or even take in a performance or some classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Welles Park is there for all your recreational needs, but if it doesn’t satisfy, then some training at Conviction Fitness and Martial Arts might do the trick. Check out a book, video, or audio tape from Conrad Sulzer Regional Library.
